Disability Program Navigator: Training ; 2009: Asset Development 2 Part Series
NDI Consulting Inc, the national training and technical assistance provider to the Disability Program Navigator Initiative, hosted a two part webinar series on Asset Development Basics and Asset Development Strategies on February 17th and February 19th to provide Navigators with information about asset building strategies and resources for people with disabilities. This webinar series addressed the following areas:
- Discussed assets and asset development and why they are important to people with disabilities.
- Highlighted ways to save and build assets through financial literacy and education.
- Reviewed other asset development basics including: the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Sites, Local Earned Income Tax Coalitions, and the Real Economic Impact Tour.
- Offered different strategies persons with disabilities can use to save and build assets.
- Talked about the importance of connecting persons with disabilities to the Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA) Project when considering asset building.
- Discussed how a Disability Program Navigator can serve as a resource and facilitator on asset development and can support asset building strategies for individuals with disabilities in the workforce investment system.

Our Presenters
Danielle “DJ” Diamond - National Disability Institute, Program Associate
Before joining the national DPN technical assistance team, DJ Diamond served as both a Disability Program Navigator and the state project lead for the Round 2 Alaska DPN program. Since joining the NDI
TA Team, she has provided training and technical assistance on multiple topics through webinars, as well as one-on-one assistance to DPN projects. On our team, Ms. Diamond also serves as the lead for developing the technical assistance website DPNavigator.net.
In addition to having direct experience with the DPN Initiative and detailed knowledge of the state and national workforce investment system, Ms. Diamond brings with her experience building relationships and collaborating with state and local level partners to promote asset development opportunities for people with disabilities. Since her transition from Alaska to Ohio, she has been an active leader in an “Asset Development” work group which consists of public and private sector organizations to promote asset development opportunities for people with disabilities.
Elizabeth Jennings – National Disability Institute, Program Associate
Ms. Jennings’ background includes creating collaborative agreements, building partnerships and executing grant allocations, assisting individuals in understanding the effect of work on Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare benefits, training individuals with disabilities on employability skills and assisting individuals in obtaining supported and competitive employment.
Ms. Jennings currently serves as an expert on asset building strategies for individuals with disabilities throughout the State of Florida, she provides training on the impact of work on Social Security benefits under Florida’s Medicaid Infrastructure Grant and she also provides technical assistance to the DPN Initiative on becoming an Employment Network through the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work program.
Michael Roush – National Disability Institute, Program Associate
Mr. Roush, the newest member of NDI, joined the NDI team in August of 2008 and is involved with the asset building projects in Florida including a new pilot project, Building Economic Strength Together (B.E.S.T.) Florida to increase the economic self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities.
Prior to joining the NDI team, Mr. Roush was a consultant with the University of South Florida's Center for Inclusive Communities and served as a Disability Program Navigator with the Florida DPN project. As a Navigator, he worked with One Stop Career Center staff and community partners to incorporate the Money Smart Curriculum and asset building resources into their programs.
Mr. Roush also serves as the Chair of the Disability Workgroup for the Wealth Building Coalition/Prosperity Campaign in St. Petersburg, Florida.
